R&D Internship – Estimating Waiting Time for A&C Cafeteria

The Artificial Intelligence and Multi-Agent Systems (AI-MAS) Laboratory at UPB is an environment focused on hot topics of research and development.
Ambient Intelligence, Applied Machine Learning, Assistive Humanoid Robotics, Reinforcement Learning … the members of our lab have got it all covered!
Our most recent research directions include: gathering context information from the environment, activity recognition from domotics sensor activations, action recognition from RGB and depth information, robot maze navigation from RGB information alone, robotic assistance of senior citizens and robotic assistance of groups of people (e.g. exhibition booth assistance, lab guide).

Internship Description

The internship addresses a very concrete issue: estimating the length of the queue of people waiting to eat at the A&C Cafeteria and estimating the waiting time, should a person add itself to the queue at the current time or at a close time in the future.
Information about the waiting queue will be gathered using a low-resolution IP camera placed so that it can view the queue at the cafeteria. The images will have to be processed to extract an estimation of the number of people waiting, as well as to evaluate the speed at which the queue is moving ahead.
The information will be accessible to end-users through a web application. More complex developments involve estimating the best time for the user to go to the cafeteria, based on the user’s schedule.
The project involves several aspects: obtaining the visual information, tracking the movement of the queue, estimating waiting times, and providing this information to end-user via a web application.

What we’re looking for:

  • Candidates currently pursuing a BA or MSc degree in Computer Science or a related technical field
  • Good knowledge of Python
  • Demonstrated extra-curricular activities & projects are a plus
  • Be driven and have a proactive approach to problem solving
