Starting with Transport Layer Security (TLS) 1.3 release, classifying encrypted application traffic became a serious issue. Previous versions of TLS standards allowed for an unencrypted field called Server Name Indication (SNI), enabling network providers and national firewalls to identify the source application that generated the encrypted content. In TLS 1.3, the SNI is encrypted, thus hiding the source of the application content and making it even more challenging to pinpoint the source application. To identify the source application, we need other means of analyzing the encrypted data flow. The project aims to improve the feature extraction of encrypted traffic by using machine learning.
